How To Apply Wood Stain in 4 Steps

Want to change the look of your wood pieces around the house? Try this!

THINGS YOU NEED
STEPS
  • 1. Test the stain on a scrap piece of wood to determine how many coats of stain you need. Apply one coat to a small section of the wood, two coats to a second section, three coats to the third section and so on.
  • 2. Smooth the surface of the work piece. Wipe any debris from the work piece with a tack cloth.
  • 3. Use a small paintbrush to apply the first coat of stain. Brush in the direction of the grain.
  • 4. After every three or four strokes of the brush, immediately go over the stain with a rag. Sweep the rag across the stained surface in the direction of the grain.
TIPS

If you are working in high humidity areas, you may want to reduce the time to 5 or 8 minutes max.
